Is £591 for an intake manifold on a VW Polo 1.2 fair?

Partly fair2011 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 (70PS)·Quoted: About £1,800 including VAT

Short answer

The timing chain work makes sense. The £591 intake manifold is the line to question, because the labour describes a gasket job while the parts list charges for a whole new manifold.

ItemQuotedOur take
Intake manifold (part)£591 + VAT (£709)Question it. The labour line says gasket, but this is a full manifold. A gasket is a few pounds.
Timing chain kit£135Fair for a decent aftermarket kit. Ask which brand.
Labour6.5 hrs at £98/hrRate is on the higher side for an independent, but 6.5 hours for this job doesn't look padded.
Oil, filter, coolant, sump plug, consumablesSmall amountsNormal on a job like this. Not where the money is.

The manifold

This is about 40% of the whole bill on its own. The labour description says they're replacing the intake manifold gasket, but the parts list has no gasket on it at all. It has a complete manifold.

Maybe the manifold really is cracked or damaged, and it happens. But if it only needs a gasket, that's a huge chunk off the bill. Ask them to show you the damage. If it really does need a manifold, ask whether a good aftermarket or used one is an option instead of a genuine VW part.

The timing chain

The 1.2 three-cylinder in these Polos is known for timing chains stretching. The classic sign is a rattle for a few seconds on a cold start. It's worth fixing, because a stretched chain left long enough can jump a tooth and do real engine damage.

Cheap chain kits are part of why some of these fail again, so it's fair to ask what brand they're fitting.

Is the car worth it?

On an older Polo, £1,800 can be a big share of what the car is worth. If the manifold turns out to need only a gasket, the job gets a lot cheaper and an easier call. Getting one other garage to quote the same work, mainly to check the manifold, is a cheap way to be sure.

What to ask the shop

  1. The labour says gasket. Why does the parts list have a whole manifold? Is the manifold itself cracked?
  2. Can you show me the damage on the manifold?
  3. Is an aftermarket or good used manifold an option?
  4. What brand is the timing chain kit?

It's our general read of that quote, not a formal Quote Guide review, and the price ranges are typical figures that vary by area and vehicle (this one is a UK quote, in pounds). Your car and your shop may be different.
